Ryu has a new nemesis: Stewie Griffin

Ottawa, April 27, 2006: After avenging his master’s death and defeating Akuma, Ryu faces his biggest challenge to date: an infant hell-bent on world domination. To promote the release of Fox Home Entertainment’s American Dad Volume One DVD Collection on April 25, Fuel Industries partnered with Capcom® Entertainment to create American Dad vs. Family Guy Kung Fu, a Street Fighter®-style game that pits the characters of both shows against each other in no-holds barred battles. In order to win, you must prove you’re kung fu worthy by facing off against the ultimate boss – Ryu.

In the most anticipated television cross over since Urkel showed up on Full House, American Dad vs. Family Guy Kung Fu allows fans to play as any of six characters from either of the shows, plus two mystery characters that will launch next week, each with up to four special combos and their own deadly finishing moves, including Stan’s Heart of Justice, where he stabs opponents with the American Flag. The arcade version of the game also has a secret unlockable, allowing players to fight as Ryu himself.

“When we first started conceptualizing this, we started from an idea that we all loved, and basically tried to push it as far as we could,” says Mike Burns, CEO and Chief Creative Officer of Fuel Industries. “When the idea of making Ryu the big boss came up, we were on the phone with Capcom within about five minutes.”

A truly transmedia campaign, American Dad vs. Family Guy Kung Fu brings together gaming, television and the Web seamlessly. From Roger’s girlish outfit to Peter’s vomiting finishing move, the game incorporates the twisted humor that has made both shows famous.

“From the beginning we knew that there were going to be hardcore American Dad and Family Guy fans playing this and that if we didn’t make the game live up to their expectations, that they would tear it apart,” says Burns. “There’s a lot of detail in the game that I think real fans will appreciate.”

Fuel and Fox intend to expand the game in the coming months to add new characters, special moves and easter eggs to the game.

“The game is a lot of fun, and we want people to keep coming back to it,” says Burns. “It’s exactly what an advergame campaign should be – fun, addictive, and what the fans want to see.”

Fans can play the game at http://www.americandadvsfamilyguy.com/. The American Dad Volume One DVD Collection will be available in the U.S. and Canada on April 25, 2006.

Ashley Mortimer, Marketing Manager, Earache Records says:

"Earache prides itself on innovation. As an independent label we've been on the cutting edge of unique and groundbreaking music for 15 years and we relish every opportunity, particularly a new or unusual one. We don't know of any other labels who have released their own game and the cross-marketing possibilities are really exciting. Culturally we don't think music and gaming are so far apart, many music fans play computer games, and nearly all gamers listen to music so we have teamed up with DDI and Metro3D to produce Earache Extreme Metal Racing. Your car shreds the opposition, the soundtrack shreds your ears - what a great combination!"

EARACHE EXTREME METAL RACING uniquely was conceived and created by 16 year old Gothic metaller Sky Nash and all started as a possible way to not only keep her amused but potentially to dissuade her from following her overworked father into a gaming career.

Frazer Nash of Frazer Nash Communications describes how his daughter created the game during work experience at developer, DDI: “Sky, then just 15, was given a huge responsibility to design her own (tongue in cheek) game. By the end of the first week, she had created a Gothic-looking game, complete with drafted levels and an awesome soundtrack. 12 months on and with professional development courtesy of Sam King and Mike Rooker (art), Mark Gemmell (production), Karl White and Julian Salter (Programming) at DDI. Aimed to appeal to Goth / Rock music fans the world over, Metro 3D have created EARACHE EXTREME METAL RACING - a monster of a game.”

Stewart Green MD of Metro 3D says:

“In a very male dominated industry you tend to think in stereotypes so when I heard that Sky, our latest girl on work experience had some design ideas to improve an off road racing game. I initially thought I was going to hear ‘make it pink with rainbows’ but I was very pleasantly surprised to hear she thought we needed the ability to mow down zombies, more carnage with chainsaws and metal spikes, and it just had to have an extreme thumping heavy metal sound track… and so Earache Extreme Metal Racing was born”

“The game is frantic, mad as hell fun, oh and in the end there was some pink … on the headless corpse bride! We have been working with Sky for the past year and the school has already booked her back for next year - to work on the sequel.”

LOS ANGELES--April 28, 2006--The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3Expo), The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS), and the Prints & Drawings Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) today announced 16 works of art from video games selected for the 2006 Into the Pixel exhibition. Now in its third year, Into the Pixel (ITP) is the world's only juried art exhibition that brings together curators from world-renowned museums, cutting-edge galleries, and the interactive entertainment industry to explore the art of the video game. The 2006 ITP art exhibition will take place May 10-12 in the Concourse Foyer of the Los Angeles Convention Center during E3Expo, the world's premier interactive entertainment trade event for computer and video games and related products.
"The Academy is thrilled to provide a platform that demonstrates its members talents, and the artistry that is now a driving force behind today's compelling interactive experiences," said Joseph Olin, president, The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. "There could be no better venue to celebrate these great works than E3Expo."
The 2006 ITP Collection includes 16 pieces of art selected from a field of more than 150 submissions that spanned the globe. The jury's selections showcase game artists' work from the US, UK, Japan, Poland, Germany, France and Canada. Art in this year's Collection features a breadth of genres, including single-figure character art, landscapes, and fantasy -- as well as art that is influenced by traditional Japanese art, panoramic paintings, line art, "woodblock," and much more. For more information about Into the Pixel art, artists and jurors, please refer to www.IntoThePixel.com.
ITP has established itself as the one annual opportunity for computer and video game artists to receive critical review of their creative achievements by peers in the both digital art world and traditional fine art experts. All 16 works of art that make up the Into the Pixel Collection are printed by a master printer, then framed and hung in the ITP Gallery at E3Expo. This year's Gallery opening is sponsored by GameTap.
"Into the Pixel has established itself as the interactive entertainment industry's most prestigious opportunity to showcase the art of the game, and celebrate the artists whose talent creates these stunning images," says Doug Lowenstein, president of the Entertainment Software Association, the trade association representing U.S. computer and video game publishers and the owner of E3Expo. "Through the unique partnership between E3Expo, the Academy and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Into the Pixel has pioneered the digital game art exhibition and continues to facilitate this valuable conversation between the traditional and digital art worlds."
Interest in Into the Pixel has spurred requests from around the world to host the Collection. Over the past year, the ITP Collection has been on exhibit at E3Expo, the Tech Museum in San Jose, the Academy's D.I.C.E. Summit conference in Las Vegas, and a private showing in Los Angeles. In October, ITP will make its European debut at GameCity in Nottingham, England. Additional venues are in the process of being finalized.

Guild Wars Factions takes place on the Asian-inspired continent of Cantha, where players create a character from eight distinct professions—including the newly created Assassin and Ritualist—and join an epic quest that pits two warring factions, the Luxons and the Kurzicks, against an ancient evil, and against each other. As players become embroiled in this brutal war of conquest, new missions will provide both roleplaying fans and competitive PvP players the opportunity to help determine the fate of Cantha.

“Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends” Gets Gold-Plating

The epic battle between technology and magic is about to begin – “Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends” for Windows has gone gold and is in position to ambush North American retail stores on May 9.

“Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends” morphs the real-time strategy (RTS) genre into the fantasy space, allowing gamers to rampage through towering cities, flame-swept deserts and brutal ice plains in battles filled with mystic creatures, fantastic machines and stunning acts of magic.

The RTS gameplay of “Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends” has been improved for a more rewarding experience – gamers have the choice of drawing out battles for multiple hours for the classic RTS feel or focusing on shorter, 20-minute, campaigns.

As the second installment of the “Rise of Nations” franchise, “Rise of Legends” also extends the gaming experience using a 3-D engine with dynamic lighting, deformable terrain, destructible buildings, ground-rattling earthquakes and massive armies locked in enormous strategic battles. “Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends” combines cutting-edge, industry-leading technology with awe-inspiring art design to create environments unlike anything ever seen.

Developed by Big Huge Games, “Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends” continues the innovative gameplay tradition established by the critically acclaimed and best-selling, “Rise of Nations,” the best-selling RTS released in 2003 that garnered numerous Game of the Year awards, including GameSpot’s Best PC Game of 2003 and PC Gamer’s Best RTS of 2003.

In addition to being able to lead vast fantasy armies into strategic battles, “Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends” introduces a host of gameplay innovations that are unique to the RTS genre. Additionally, the popular Conquer the World (CTW) Campaign returns with fresh concepts that make each strategic decision critical to eventual victory over a constantly adapting enemy. The revamped and improved CTW Campaign immerses players in a land of magical armies and never before seen technologies in an epic battle to save the world against an ominous evil force.

San Jose, CA – April 25, 2006 – Niko Partners, a leading research and consultancy firm on the Chinese gaming market, today announced results from its latest report showing impressive growth for the Chinese videogame market in 2005. According to Niko’s fourth annual report on the market, 29 percent of China’s 27 million gamers played games more than 60 hours per month, which helped contribute to a 23.6 percent growth rate in China’s videogame market from 2004 to 2005. The Chinese market, of which 84 percent is comprised of online games, now stands at $683 million. The market is forecast to enjoy a compound annual growth rate of 24 percent for the period 2005-2010, climbing to $2.1 billion.

“Chinese gamers’ passion for massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) has extended to the casual and premium casual segments,” said Lisa Cosmas Hanson, managing partner of Niko Partners. “Premium casual games provide new gamers greater access to the online game market and open up an alternate source of entertainment for hardcore gamers.” Niko Partners projects that premium casual games will gain in popularity comparable to MMORPGs over the next several years, achieving 40 percent of all online revenue by 2010.

Other key findings related to overall China videogame market growth

• Internet Cafés: Gamers access the online gaming universe an average of 4 hours per day through the estimated 20 million PCs in China’s 265,000 officially licensed and unlicensed Internet cafés, almost all of which have broadband access and regularly maintained PCs.

• Adoption of Broadband in Homes: One factor contributing to the rise in gamers is faster adoption of broadband in homes, which enabled more gamers to access online games.

• Increase in Casual Gaming: Casual games, including puzzle, board and advanced casual games, comprised 20 percent of the online market in 2005 and should rise to nearly 40 percent in 2010.

• Hard-Core Gamers: 29 percent of all gamers were classified as hardcore in 2005, up from 20 percent in 2004. The definition is based on more than 60 hours of online game play per month.

Social and Cultural Preferences

There are different preferences held by gamers in China, Niko Partners reports. In particular, gamers enjoy softer graphics and brighter colors of the games. Socializing and competing with friends while gaming are primary factors in the popularity of Internet cafés. When next-generation consoles legally launch in China in the next 1-2 years, their online functionality will allow gamers to continue these social and competitive aspects.

“Not only is it imperative for a foreign videogame company to understand the preferences and demands of Chinese gamers, they must also strive to develop games that fit the restrictive regulations of the Chinese government,” continued Ms. Hanson. “The Chinese market is different than other global markets, and it will take perseverance as well as innovation in business models for foreign companies to succeed there.”

The 2006 Chinese Videogame Market Study by Niko Partners is a comprehensive review and forecast of the 2005-2010 Online, PC, Console and Handheld games market. It was written based on more than 36,000 points of data collected by Niko Partners in 10 Chinese cities.

Niko Partners was founded in 2001 as an international business expansion consulting services firm for the multimedia software industry. Since 2003, we have conducted and published primary market research on the China digital entertainment market, both in the form of syndicated reports and as custom research studies. We also execute market-entry strategy projects using research and our extensive Niko Network of associates throughout China. Three Rings to Give Away 18th Century Authentic Gold Doubloon for In-Game Five Millionth Doubloon Purchase

San Francisco, CA - April 21, 2006 - Three Rings Design, Inc., a premier developer of multi-player online casual games, announced today that it will give away a 1787 Spanish Gold Escudo Doubloon, rescued from pirate loot, to the player that purchases the five millionth doubloon for their popular online game "Puzzle Pirates."

The company expects to reach the five millionth sale mark later this week and will announce the winner shortly after. In light of some strong market trends, the company recently shifted its strategy from subscription pricing to a "free-to-play" model that includes the option of purchasing micro-currency. Players can then spend their micro-currency on in-game upgrades and additional content.

The sale of five million doubloons is an important milestone for the company and points to the broad acceptance of that model. In fact, the company is launching a new game "Bang! Howdy," a multiplayer online tactical strategy game for the PC which uses the same payment structure and online distribution model.

"Three Rings has led the charge for micro-currency in the US market, and the success of 'Puzzle Pirates' doubloons has convinced us that it represents the future for online entertainment," said Daniel James, Three Rings' CEO. "We were inspired by the Korean market, where 'free to play, pay for item' is the ubiquitous business model for online games. As the US market matures to meet Korea, we intend to keep leading the way."

The company is riding some powerful trends in digital entertainment - the popularity of casual games, a move towards the massively multiplayer, and the ascent of digital downloads. With the shift to "freemium" pricing, the company recently became cash-flow positive and funds the distribution and development of its games internally. Latest Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Gaming News

As the industry gears up for E3, Microsoft is preparing to unveil the next wave of premium game content and online gaming services for Xbox 360, and there are more surprises just around the corner.

The World Embraces Xbox 360

The worldwide Xbox 360 launch was met with great success and fanfare in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore on March 16 and Australia and New Zealand on March 23, successfully placing the console around the world.

The launch “down under” was the highest grossing entertainment launch in Australian history – grossing more than the Harry Potter books or the Lord of the Rings movies. More than 350 stores opened in Australia and New Zealand at midnight and the console availability may have temporarily impacted the region’s productivity: more than half of customers who preordered a console said they intended to take a day off from work to play their new consoles. More than 30,000 consoles sold in the first four days, making Xbox 360 the fastest-selling console launch in Australian history.

The excitement continues on April 22 when Australia aims to break records again, this time with the world’s largest water balloon fight. The water balloon event ties into the console’s “Jump In” brand advertising tagline, which has heralded the next generation of gaming (check out the ad online at xbox.com.au/waterballoon). The event takes place at Coogee Beach, one of Australia’s iconic beaches. Thousands of gamers from all over the world will launch more than 50,000 water balloons at each other.

Australia isn’t the only country stepping up the fun. In a news conference in Tokyo on April 6, Takashi Sensui, the new general manager of the Japanese Xbox division, announced that 15 more games would be added to the Japanese lineup by summer, bringing the total to 40 – a number that is expected to double by the end of the year. Also announced was the “Blue Limited Edition” Xbox 360 model themed after the FIFA World Cup, of which Xbox 360 is the official games console. A special blue faceplate included in this model matches Japan’s national soccer team’s color. Other Japanese-exclusive content includes an online “Mobile Suit Gundam” game from Namco/Bandai, SquareEnix’ exclusive “Project Sylph,” a secret RPG developed by TriAce, downloadable anime episodes through Xbox Live Marketplace, and the upcoming RPGs “Lost Odyssey” and “Blue Dragon.”

In an effort to meet the unwavering demand for Xbox 360 across the world, Microsoft is now shipping two to three times the number of consoles that had previously been shipped to retailers each week. This keeps us firmly on track to meet forecast of 4.5 to 5.5 million units worldwide by the end of June 2006.

Xbox 360 Games: Topping the Charts

Xbox 360 is setting the bar for high definition gaming. Both “Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter” (Ubisoft) and “Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” (Bethesda) exploded software sales in March. Bethesda announced “Oblivion” shipped more than 1.7 million copies on the Xbox 360 and Windows platforms between its launch on March 20 and April 7, making it one of the fastest-selling RPGs ever. “Oblivion” has been receiving accolades from nearly every game reviewer, and has been hailed by some as “one of the best RPGs ever made.” In Europe, “Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter” topped the all-formats sales charts the week it released – replaced only by “Oblivion” two weeks later.

Of the 80 high-definition games scheduled for release by June, games being released in April include:

o “FIFA World Cup™” (EA SPORTS)
o “FINAL FANTASY® XI” (Square Enix, Inc.)
o “Top Spin 2“ (2K Sports)
o “Major League Baseball 2K6” (2K Sports)
o “Battlefield 2: Modern Combat™” (Electronic Arts)
o “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend” (Eidos)

Xbox Live Marketplace and Xbox Live Arcade: The Digital Trendsetters

There is incredible momentum behind the Xbox Live Marketplace digital distribution center. More than 10 million pieces of content have been downloaded from Marketplace since launch. In addition to high-definition movie trailers, games and demos, more than three million of the downloads were Xbox Live Arcade game titles. The ability to “try Arcade titles before you buy” is a big hit, with an average 20 percent trial-to-purchase conversion rate (39 percent for the most popular Arcade game, “Geometry Wars.”)

Gamers can also expand their gaming experience by downloading new content from Xbox Live Marketplace. Three new content packs for “Kameo: Elements of Power” introduced entirely new gaming features such as online cooperative gameplay. Kameo and her warriors received digital makeovers with a slew of new skins and costumes available online. Kameo players will also have a chance to leave their own personalized mark on the game with the “Kameo: Elements of Power Design Your Skin Contest.” Users will submit their own creative skin designs, with the winner’s skin available to the community after the contest concludes.

In “Perfect Dark Zero,” Joanna Dark fans will enjoy new maps in which to play and new gameplay functions in the coming months to expand this best-selling Xbox 360 title.

The downloadable “Project Gotham Racing 3” Speed Pack gives racers access to new gameplay upgrades including new cars. “Project Gotham Racing 3” also kicked off its first major tournament on April 17. When users register for the event, their game becomes tournament-enabled with the most recent update, and then they compete with other speed demons from around the world in a variety of events. Qualifiers and single-elimination tournaments culminate in a race for the gold at the Lamborghini Factory in Italy in June. Registration for the tournament closes on April 28.

In Game With Fame (GWF) news, Xbox Live gamers got a chance to participate in a special GWF session on April 5. Featuring R&B artist Chris Brown challenging opponents to a game of “Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter,” the session also included an auction for various prizes including signed CDs. The proceeds from winning bids went to Habitat for Humanity’s New Orleans relief efforts.

Exclusive Entertainment on Xbox Live

Xbox Live users can now download exclusive content from Epic records to enhance their entertainment experience. Announced last month, the exclusive Epic Records Artist of the Month program brings the hottest music to Xbox Live users, absolutely free. Each month, Epic features songs in 5.1 digital and high-definition videos from a new artist, starting with British singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield whose video “Unwritten” is available through April 30. Artists of the Month will also participate in the “Game with Fame” program on Xbox Live Arcade, giving fans a chance to test their mettle against their favorite musicians.

Free Xbox Live Gold Weekend: Everyone Jumps In

If the ability to demo games converts to sales, then what about the ability to demo the entire Xbox Live Gold service? That was the philosophy behind the incredibly successful Free Xbox Live Gold Weekend, presented courtesy of Verizon from March 31 through April 2, 2006. Xbox 360 gamers connected to Xbox Live enjoyed all the services of gold membership, free of charge.

Gamers rocked the Xbox Live world during the Free Gold Weekend in a series of events representing the largest multiplayer games programming effort ever. Events included Xbox Live Arcade leaderboard tournaments, a series of Play and Win contests, and a mentorship program where “veterans” helped “newbies” get acquainted with the service.

Viva Piñata: The Next Big Thing

On March 15, Microsoft Game Studios and 4Kids Entertainment announced the introduction of “Viva Piñata,” a mass entertainment property created by Rare that features a vibrant world of living piñata animals. 4Kids Entertainment are known for powerhouse properties like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

This fall, a Viva Piñata television show debuts on 4Kids TV on Fox, followed by an Xbox 360-exclusive game in the 2006 holiday season. The customizable and immersive game allows players to create their own unique Piñata-filled adventures.

When Celebrities Play

April 8 saw the first “Settle the Score” event, a new program where celebrities go head to head on the Xbox to see who’s really #1. Kobe Bryant of the LA Lakers defeated Corey Maggette of the LA Clippers in a game of NBA 2K6 for bragging rights – and an Xbox 360 for each of Kobe’s teammates. Future events featuring celebrity rivals are already in the works.

The Envelope Please…

We are proud to announce that the recently-redesigned Xbox.com website was nominated for a Webby Award for Community. The Webby Awards – considered the Oscars for websites – recognize the best online design and content, and by extension, recognize the growing gaming community at Xbox.com, fueled in no small part by the surge in Xbox Live members with the release of Xbox 360.

Games for Windows: A Legendary Rise

One of the most anticipated real-time strategy games will hit the Windows platform next month: “Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends.” This fantasy title has been building buzz online for some time, and fans are ready to roll up their sleeves and pit magic against technology in this epic strategy game.

Additionally, Zoo Tycoon fans will want to visit the completely redesigned Web site for “Zoo Tycoon,” launched on April 3. Fans of the franchise can visit ZooTycoon.com for the latest zoo news, downloadable wallpapers, coloring book pages, ring tones and much more.

Microsoft Gaming: Accolades Abound

Next-gen.biz recently named a list of Top 100 game developers for next-generation consoles, and 15 of those 100 developers are members of the Microsoft Game Studios team. In alphabetical order, the designers honored include: Cliff Bleszinki, Martyn Chudley, Denis Dyack, David Jones, Jason Jones, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Peter Molyneux, Dr Ray Muzyak, Dr Greg Zeschuk, Okomoto-san, Alexey Pajitnov, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Bruce Shelley, Tim Stamper and Chris Stamper.

Additionally, IGN recently compiled metrics on gaming in 2006 with three major Xbox 360 titles making the “most anticipated original IP” list: “Gears of War” (Epic), “Prey” (Venom Games and 3D Realms), and “Ninety-Nine Nights” (Q Entertainment). Epic Games and Bungie Studios are among the top 5 Developers of 2006.

The Family Grows

A major partner joined the Microsoft Game Studios family this month: Lionhead Studios, makers of the revolutionary “Fable” and “Black & White.” Helmed by founder and legendary game designer Peter Molyneux, Lionhead will now produce content exclusively for the Xbox 360 and Windows gaming platforms.

Availability Means Attachment

With increased supply hitting retail shelves, gamers are gobbling up the next generation of games. Xbox 360 had 3 of the 10 best-selling titles across all video game platforms. “Ghost Recon: Advanced War Fighter” was the #2 title, “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” was #3, and “Fight Night: Round 3” was the #9 title. “Oblivion” scored the #3 spot despite being on the market for only a few days in March.

“Fight Night: Round 3” experienced its best sales since launch on Xbox 360. Gamers are clearly looking for a high-definition, next-generation gaming experience now. With Xbox Live giving gamers the opportunity to download the demo and try the game, “Fight Night: Round 3” has become one of the best-attached boxing games in console history.

Top 5 selling Xbox 360 titles for March:

1. “Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter” (Ubisoft)

2. “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” (Bethesda)

3. “Fight Night: Round 3” (EA)

4. “Burnout: Revenge” (EA)

5. “The Outfit” (THQ)

The Launch-to-date attach rate for games increased to a record 4.5 games per console in North America, fueled by the desire to jump into the next generation of high-definition entertainment and the increased availability of Xbox 360 in retail channels. The attach rate for Xbox 360 accessories broke its own record, at 3.0 per console in North America.

Maelstrom’s factions revealed - the human race divided and the new alien threat

New York (April 18, 2006) – Coming late September, exclusively for Windows PC, Maelstrom is an action strategy game where Hollywood sci-fi meets groundbreaking RTS gameplay.

Set against the violent ecological meltdown of Earth, players will be able to unleash a tide of carnage with colossal transforming robots, crush enemies by raining down fire, level entire mountains and freeze the oceans.

In this ravaged world, water has become the most valuable of resources and has divided what remains of mankind in two: the urban freedom fighting ‘Remnants’ and the technologically advanced ‘Ascension.’ Now, these two groups must wage war against a new threat, the invasion of a savage alien race, the Hai-Genti resulting in a desperate struggle for supremacy and survival.

The Remnants, Ascension and Hai-Genti comprise Maelstrom’s three playable factions, and each is superbly different in terms of theme and play strategy.

The Remnants

* Led by ex-US military General James Buchanan, players can take charge with the heroic Remnants, as they modify their units on the fly to deal with the situation.
* Use stealth to infiltrate enemy lines and guerrilla tactics to devise lethal traps involving napalm, proximity mines, bomb cluster chains and devastating nuclear weapons.
* Turn enemy units against their masters, as players hack into and control the Ascension’s ruthless transforming tech, the Mechamorphs.

The Ascension

* Dominate with the insidious Ascension, headed by Arlan Khan, as players command the all-powerful Mechmorphs with their transforming technology.
* Fear no one with advanced technology and shielded units, with their laser weaponry, cryogen rays and orbital weapon platforms, which strike down death from above.
* It’s not just the Ascension’s weaponry that can transform; if players need to relocate their base or buildings, these too can be transformed and moved on.

The Hai-Genti

* Attack the human factions and command the full strike force of the invading Hai-Genti.
* Take on an altogether alien strategy and fire down spores from the skies to grow an army of vicious bloodthirsty beasts.
* Launch surprise attacks and tear the humans limb from limb to feed ravenous spores, the literal hearts of players’ campaigns.
* Sacrifice own units to produce even more vicious and deadly mutated monsters. After all, they’re only fodder for the cause.

Complete with the ability to terraform landscapes and transform units, Maelstrom will provide strategy gamers with the power to harness the forces of nature in the most frantic, destructive, action-packed RTS game yet.

Based on an original concept by Codemasters and KDV Games, the Russian team behind the critically acclaimed Perimeter, and wrapped in a gripping science fiction scenario devised by screenwriter James Swallow, Maelstrom will launch in late September exclusively for PC. For all the latest information and to sign up for exclusive faction newsletters, visit http://www.codemasters.com/maelstrom.

"Ultimate Baseball Online 2006" Announced for the PC

DIAMOND BAR, Calif. (April 12, 2006) - Netamin® Communication Corporation today announced the latest edition of the world's first massive multi-player online baseball game - Ultimate Baseball Online(tm) 2006.

Coming on the heels of the first-ever World Baseball Classic(tm), Ultimate Baseball Online 2006 gives players the opportunity to play sports gamers from other countries in virtual competition. Ultimate Baseball Online is currently played world wide, with large fan bases not only in the U.S., but also in Canada, Japan, Korea, England, Germany, Australia, and numerous other countries. Ultimate Baseball Online 2006 (UBO 2006) can be downloaded and played for free at www.ultimatebaseballonline.com.

Ultimate Baseball Online 2006 is a technological innovation which lets sports fans and gamers play a virtual version of baseball in a real-time environment on any PC with a broadband connection. UBO delivers a first-person perspective online sports experience as human players form team to compete against other teams in real-time. UBO players can compete in tournaments to win cash and other valuable prizes.

In Ultimate Baseball Online, players create their own characters, and gain experience for every game they play. When their character "levels up," they get points that they can use to increase their character's abilities in areas such as running speed, throwing power, batting power, etc. Unlike traditional baseball video games, UBO lets players play with teammates - everyone sees the game from their own character's first-person perspective. And just as in baseball, team communication (team chat) is essential for success on the field.

"Ultimate Baseball Online brings the 'team experience' to the sports gaming experience," said Andy Wang, president of Netamin. "A team of people playing against another team of real people is a much different experience than one person sitting alone in front of a console game playing against a computer."

To ensure a true baseball player experience, Darrell Evans, a two-time Major League All-Star ('73 & '74) and World Series winner (1985), serves as UBO's principle baseball consultant. "Ultimate Baseball Online, for me, is the closest thing to being back on the playing field," said Darrell Evans. "The mental part of baseball has finally been captured. UBO will give players a great appreciation for the fine points of each position, as well as an understanding of the teamwork that is involved in playing the sport of baseball successfully."

About Netamin (UBO)
Netamin Corporation, a pioneer in Massive Multiplayer Online Sports Games (MMOSG), is headquartered in Diamond Bar, California with additional operations in Korea. Tantalus and Kemco Announce Top Gear for Nintendo DS

Tantalus Interactive is happy to announce its partnership with Japanese publisher Kemco to develop an innovative new racing title for the DS platform. The two companies collaborated in 2003 to produce the award winning Top Gear Rally on GBA, a game ultimately published by Nintendo. This extension of the relationship will see the creation of an original racing title for the DS, leveraging Kemco’s popular Top Gear brand. The new game, Top Gear: Downforce, will ship late in 2006 and will be the second DS release for Tantalus, following on from the hugely popular SpongeBob SquarePants: The Yellow Avenger.

Tantalus CEO Tom Crago said the company was happy to have the opportunity to develop another title in the Top Gear franchise. “We loved the original Top Gear on N64, and of course our rally title on GBA was a big success. This time around we’re attempting something completely different. We want to create a racing game that feels perfectly at home on the DS platform, something built from the ground up to exploit the cool features of the hardware.”

Kemco President Masakatsu Hirose shared Crago’s enthusiasm. “Top Gear Rally on GBA rates among Kemco’s most successful releases. Many people enjoyed this title, and we know that with Tantalus we can create a new game within the franchise that will be just as popular.”

Top Gear: Downforce will be a ‘top-down’ style racer, boasting 3D models, robust vehicle physics, and the ability to place hazards on the track surface using the touch screen of the DS. The game will also allow for wireless multiplayer races and data sharing between players.

Odama is one of those games that's so different from everything else that it's hard to know what to do with it. It's a pinball game that also requires you to move a bell and some troops across the board. It sounds crazy and it is, although it's not really a thrill a minute. The reward takes longer to earn and you have to think about it.

The Odama is really a huge pinball that rolls across the battlefield destroying anything that it rolls over. The Odama gets launched into the battlefield where you can tilt the surface left, right, up or down. There are also two big flippers at the bottom of the screen that you use to send the Odama back into the battlefield when it settles down. In between the flippers emerges a small army and some big men carrying a bell. Your job is to get the bell and the soldiers through the gate on the other side of the battlefield. You do this by destroying enemy fortifications and clearing a path with the ball, and voice command for the soldiers and the men carrying the bell.

Hold down X to use the Nintendo GameCube Mic and issue voice commands to your troops. There are a number of commands. March Left, March Right, Advance, Press Forward, all do what you think they would do. There are some nuances to transporting the bell. You can roll over a heart and then bank the ball off the bell to turn the ball green and convert enemy troops to your side. Also, and this is my favorite, smash the bell with the Odama and send a sound wave at the enemy that renders them confused and unable to defend themselves.

If this sounds simple, then I didn't explain it well enough. It's not simple at all. It's like playing pinball against moving targets and at the same time sending an object across the table with your voice. I really have to pay attention to this game. So it just sucks me in and then I finish a level and realize that I've been playing for half an hour. So either you'll get completely absorbed in the game or you'll think it's too complicated and won't get into it at all. I think it's worth the learning curve and recommend Odama. It's a fine example of the way that Nintendo continues to drive gaming forward through innovation.

REDMOND, Wash., April 10, 2006 -- Nintendo's Odama(TM) is the finest microphone-controlled Japanese feudal warrior pinball game you'll ever play. [Unlike all of the feudal warrior pinball games without a mic.] The one-of-a-kind game, which launches today exclusively for Nintendo GameCube(TM), represents just one more way that Nintendo is pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a video game.
"With all these different genres, Odama delivers a unique and compelling game-play experience," said Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo of America's vice president of marketing & corporate affairs. "Without playing it, it's not the easiest concept to grasp, but once you play, it's tremendously fun and easy to get into." [Not unlike a comfy pair of tennis shoes or a warm bubble bath ... Wait, what were we talking about?]
Odama lets users command an army of soldiers who are subject to the sometimes devastating power of the Odama, a massive pinball controlled by giant flippers. The Odama rolls over enemy troops and eliminates obstacles, though it also can crush a player's own soldiers if not aimed properly. [FYI, this part rocks. The little soldier guys scream when the ball rolls over them. They're all like "It ... hurts ... the horror!"]
Players can issue a variety of commands to soldiers on the battlefield simply by speaking into the included Nintendo GameCube Microphone. For instance, saying "press forward!" will cause your soldiers on the screen to make an aggressive push into enemy territory, while saying "rally!" will send a team of soldiers to gather in a certain location. The longer players play, the more voice commands they learn. [Now if only it had commands for "bring me a pizza" and "do my laundry."]
Odama appeals to a wide variety of gaming fans, from pinball enthusiasts to military gamers and strategy fans. [Not to mention cubicle dwellers who dream of one day mastering the ancient, sacred art of multitasking.] Odama, available now, is Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older.

SAN JOSE, Calif. & CTIA in LAS VEGAS (April 5, 2006) – Wireless subscribers have played more than 3.6 million games of Pool Pro OnlineTM from Namco Networks a leading publisher and developer of wireless games and content. Contributing to this impressive statistic, the top record-setting player has played the real-time, head-to-head pool game more than 27,000 times.

The first multi-player pool game available from national wireless carriers, Namco Network’s Pool Pro Online presents the option for players to compete head-to-head online across carriers, or offline in single player mode and multiplayer hot-seat mode. Pool Pro Online features both 8- and 9-ball games, three difficulty settings for offline play, and a zoom-in feature that allows players to zoom-in on tricky shots and hit with precise aim. In online mode, players compete in real-time against thousands of competitors across the country. Scores are published on five leader boards – Most Wins, Best Win-Loss Ratio, Best Rating, Best 8-ball Player and Best 9-ball Player – allowing players to strategically choose their next competitor.

“Similar to how online games attracted PC gamers to the Internet, networked games are drawing social gamers to the mobile gaming space,” said Scott Rubin, vice president of sales and marketing for Namco Networks. “Knowing there is a person on the other end, not just a computer, increases the competitive nature of the game, making it a more enjoyable and interactive experience. We are thrilled by the success of this game and by the 3.6 million games that have played online. This proves to us that there is strong demand for network enabled game play on the wireless platform.”

Adding to the social aspect of the game, some carriers offer Pool Pro Online with a simulated chat function, allowing players to communicate with their competitors while playing online. The message swapping functionality allows players to send predefined messages to each other from a list that changes depending on the player’s current game situation. For example, if a player is ready to take a shot, he could send the message, “This one looks easy,” to his opponent. If he accidentally sinks the 8 ball, he can say “I let you win”.

Visit www.NamcoGames.com for information on how to download Pool Pro Online or other mobile game hits from Namco Networks.

Pursuit Force

Score: 3.5 out of 5
Sony Computer Entertainment America
Rated "T" for Teen

Pursuit Force is a combination racing and combat game that offers enough variation in game play to keep you on your toes. Nothing about it is all that special, but it's good for some entertainment.

As a member of the Pursuit Force, you are assigned to bring some law and order to Capital City by taking out five criminal gangs who have overrun the city. The gangs found in the game range from the Capellis, your typical mafia crime family, to the Vixens, a group of scantily clad high tech thieves. Most of the game is centered around pursuing these gangs using various vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, speedboats, and a heavily armed helicopter. A small portion also involves some on-foot action, but those segments are few and far between. Chasing down enemy cars sounds like any pursuit game, but it gets better - you can actually lean out of your moving vehicle with a weapon to inflict some damage, and most importantly, abandon the vehicle entirely and leap onto another. The best is when you can jump out of your vehicle and onto the enemy's, all the while shooting at them in a glorified slo-mo. It reminds me a little of Mad Max, especially The Road Warrior where he's driving the truck at the end and all the bad guys are fighting with him. After grabbing onto the roof or hood of an enemy's ride, you need to work to shoot down the driver and possibly a heavily armed passenger or two to regain control, all while trying not to be shot or tossed off. The fence swings both ways though, and you may find a gang member on your hood trying to commandeer your vehicle as well. If you successfully bring criminals to justice lawfully, it will boost the "Justice Bar". Once activated, you can then slow down time during vehicle jumps, shoot at enemies in mid-air, and even restore player and vehicle health. It sounds complicated, but once you get the hang of the controls it isn't too bad.

Overall, vehicle control is just what you'd expect, except that the boats are too sluggish and the motorcycles too flighty. Smashing into other vehicles and obstacles won't destroy your car, at least right away, but they will slow you down and sometimes spin you around and put you out of the race. There are about 30 missions overall, grouped by the five gangs you need to take down. The missions range from eliminating a series of gang members in an alotted time to taking control of a bus while keeping its speed over 100 mph (how original!). BigBig does a good job of keeping the game play varied but consistent so it keep you on your toes. You always start off in your vehicle (boat, car, motorcycle), then jump to the perp's vehicles, overpower them and use their vehicle. So there's lots of changes but overall the game play is similar enough that you don't have to spend too much time trying to figure out what's going on. Each mission gives you the ability to unlock better weapons, more missions, better cars, etc. In addition to the missions there are time trials and racing levels. My guess is that it would take about 15 hours to master this game and complete all the levels.

Pursuit Force looks and sounds good. The graphics have a strong style about them. They're not the best, but they look very good. The frame rate is smooth and consistent, although the backgrounds are a little boring and repetitive. The animations get a little repetitive, too. How many times to I have to watch my car explode in exactly the same way? I have to give Pursuit Force props for the way that the car chases are "filmed". They do a great job capturing the speed and the hectic nature of the chase, and it is plain old exciting to jump from car to car.

There are a few weird things about the game. Firstly, at the beginning of the Time Trials they say, "3-1-2" the first time and then after that it is the usual "3-2-1". Also, you can't put the PSP into sleep mode while you're in a menu; you have to be playing the game in order to go into sleep mode. That's a big deal for we gamers on the go.

Pursuit Force is more than just a racing game and with its multiple modes it's sure to entertain.
