Halo: Contact Harvest Launches Today

*_FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE_*
**
*TOR BOOKS LAUNCHES / HALO^® : CONTACT HARVEST/ TODAY*

* *

*/Bungie Lead Writer, Joseph Staten, Pens Latest in Best-Selling Series /*

New York , NY – Tuesday October 30, 2007 - Tor Books, an imprint of Tom
Doherty Associates, LLC—the largest publisher of science fiction in the
world—announces the launch of /Halo/®: /Contact Harvest/. The new novel
is the latest of the /New York Times / bestselling series based on the
hugely successful Microsoft and Bungie Studios' /Halo/® video games for
the Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system. / Halo: Contact
Harvest/ is written by Joseph Staten, Bungie Studios' lead writer and
one of the original creators of the Halo game trilogy.

Though /Halo:/ /Contact Harvest / marks Joseph Staten first foray into
novel writing, he has served as a writer and cinematics director for
Halo (2001) and Halo 2 (2004) and the record-breaking Halo 3.

In/ Halo: Contact Harvest/, Staten reveals the state of the Halo
universe leading up to humanity's devastating first contact with the
Covenant —a chance encounter that catapulted mankind into a struggle for
its very existence. Readers will experience the start of the
Human-Covenant war from the perspective of Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson,
Master Chief's legendary confidant and mentor. As readers follow the
young Sergeant's adventures, they will gain terrifying insights into
both the Covenant's genocidal fury and the vicious civil war that
threatened to destroy humanity's fledgling interstellar empire, even
before the Covenant got their chance.

"It goes without saying that Joseph has great, intimate knowledge of the
Halo universe, so who better to tell the harrowing tale of humanity's
first contact with the Covenant?" says Tor Editor Eric Raab. "In the
novel, Joseph not only reveals exciting nuances of known events and
characters such as Sgt. Johnson. But he also breaks new ground —takes
readers on an action-packed journey to a little-known but vital part of
the Halo universe: the far-flung, ill-fated word of Harvest."

Halo has emerged from the video game world as a global phenomenon. Its
latest installment, Halo 3, garnered more than $300 million in its first
week alone, making it the fastest selling video game ever, and one of
the most successful entertainment properties ever. With a fully
fleshed-out universe of heroes, villains and epic scenarios, the novels
expand the universe to give fans a grander view of the game environments
and characters they encounter.

To date, over 20 million copies of the games in the /Halo/ trilogy have
been sold worldwide. The record week one sales comes on the heels of the
previously announced $170 million in sales in the U.S. within the first
24 hours of the game's release, which marked not just the biggest
videogame launch, but the biggest entertainment launch in history. The
Xbox 360 title beat previous U.S. sales records set by blockbuster
openings for entertainment events like the release of Spider-Man 3 and
/Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows/. Additionally, more than 1.7
million copies of /Halo 3/ were preordered in the United States, making
it the fasting pre-selling game in history, surpassing the previous
record-setting pre-sales of /Halo 2
/.

Wii-kly Update: Three New Classic Games Announced for Wii Shop Channel

This Halloween, you needn't leave your own living room to encounter spooky
spirits and creepy creatures from mysterious otherworlds. The Wii Shop Channel
is celebrating the year's most frightfully fun holiday by offering a mix of
eerie games that'll keep players' spines tingling. Mash with monsters in a
classic Castlevania sequel, tangle with supernatural samurai or battle as a
powerful magician-you're bound to discover cool tricks and visual treats no
matter which titles you choose. Happy Hallo-Wii!Today Nintendo adds three new
classic games to the popular Wii(TM) video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The
games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel
every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii
Points(TM) to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop
Channel or at retail outlets.

This week's new games are:

Castlevania(R) II Simon's Quest (NES(R), 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild
Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): In this one-player adventure, you'll take on
the role of Simon Belmont once again and duel to the death with Count Dracula.
Grab your legendary whip, Vampire Killer, and roam freely through Transylvania
on a quest to find the count's missing body parts-these are the key to breaking
an evil curse. This quest won't be easy, though, for you must battle hideous
fiends who stalk the land. In addition to the intense action and tight control
the Castlevania series is known for, this sequel also introduced several unique
game-play elements into the fold. Build experience the longer you play, buy
weapons and items from merchants, or talk with villagers to get clues (some of
which are false). Watch as day turns to night and then back again. Take a deep
breath, steady your nerves, and help Simon end his curse and defeat the count
once and for all.

SAMURAI-GHOST(TM) (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older
- Animated Blood and Violence, 600 Wii Points): This action platformer features
a samurai ghost from the depths of the underworld. In a past war, Kagekiyo
managed to defeat the shogun Yoritomo and his clan. However, their evil spirits
were not completely destroyed, and now, in the world known as Dark Side, they
seek the time of their rebirth. In order to shatter those ambitions, Kagekiyo
must make his way across seven zones and head for "The Heart of the Darkside"
where Yoritomo lies in wait. Use spirit weapons to power up your sword, or
other items, such as candles to recover health, and defeat the endless hordes
of enemies. Each zone is not only protected by a boss but also includes demons
as well as real samurai from 12th-century Japan. Get ready for some intense
one-on-one combat action.

MAGICIAN LORD (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen - Blood and Fantasy
Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released in 1990 and regarded as one of the NEOGEO's
earliest signature games, this side-scrolling platformer mixes action with the
mystical world of fantasy. A magician named Elta, last descendant of the famed
Magician Lord, takes on an epic adventure to save the world from the evil
Gul-Agieze. Elta must battle through eight stages, collecting the eight tomes
of power that are key to defeating Gul-Agieze and his evil plans. By obtaining
orbs in one of three colors (elements) that appear during the game, Elta's
offensive powers and jumping abilities can be strengthened. The effect varies
considerably depending on the combination of elements, though, and Elta can
transform into six different forms: Waterman, Dragon Warrior, Shinobi, Samurai,
Raijin or Poseidon. Can you help Elta to become the new Magician Lord?

Rock Band Preview

I was lucky enough to be invited up to MTV the other day to take a look at the upcoming Rock Band. First of all, that building is really something. The lobby has a big waterfall and they actually had someone playing piano. I couldn't help but wonder when Sarrel Group is going to hire a pianist to play in the lobby during lunch time. Second of all, the room they showed me the game in was like a home theater lab and was very cool. Big huge projection screen TV and a massive sound system. Add that to an inside look at one of the most anticipated games of the year and what could be bad?

rockband-singer.jpg

To cut to the chase, I loved it. I had a great time playing the game. So much fun. It really tapped the closet musician in me. Much more than Guitar Hero, which is a hell of a lot of fun too, but Rock Band gives you more variety. If I felt like playing guitar I could. If I wanted to sing I could. Or I could play drums. Or not play drums very well as it would turn out. I wish there were more songs in the game, but overall I totally have to recommend Rock Band for people who want to play music games.

rockband-guitar2.jpg

My love affair with Harmonix began back in the day of Frequency and Amplitude. At one point I reviewed Amplitude as one of the most innovative games to come out on PS2. Gameplay has remained essentially the same and I love it. This is apparently the culmination of everything that Harmonix has been working towards over the years.

The hook here is that you can play bass, guitar, drums, or sing. There is a real group experience. People can form their own band and then play together either in one place or online. The cool thing is that how well each of you play affects the overall score and the band's success. If someone screws up the others can bail them out with "overdrive" which is similar to GH's "star power". Guitar and bass are the same. Drums was really hard for me. After screwing up over and over again I developed the theory that I can no longer move my arms to push buttons as part of a game - I can only move my fingers to push buttons in a game. Vocals kicked ass. I have always wanted to scream Mississippi Queen (you know what I mean) while pretending I'm Leslie West.

rockband-mic.jpg

One of the things they've done is try to build the experience of an actual performance. The HUD (or track down which the notes float) has been minimized. Where GH seemed cartoony, Rock Band has put the emphasis on being realistic. They did mocap with a bunch of bands and a crowd. It doesn't sound like much because the real core of the game is still the same, but it does make it feel a little more real.

rockband-guitar.jpg

They're going to sell this as a bundle with the instruments for $169 and just the game separately for $59.99. Guitars from previous games may or may not work with Rock Band - official party line is that the game will work with any Xbox or PS3 "standard" controller. The PS3 version will ship with a wireless guitar. The Xbox 360 version includes a USB hub so that all the guitars, drums, microphone, etc can be connected at once.

rockband-drum.jpg

World Tour mode is where it all really shines. This is the career mode. Create a band and a bunch of musicians and then hit the road. Creating musicians is very detailed with many more options for customization that GH. You pick your character's name, hometown, attitude (which affects how he/she moves on the stage), and physique (height, weight, facial features, hair, skin). I think I heard someone say that you can design a t-shirt in the game and then get it made in real life. Tattoos (and stickers for guitars) are almost completely customizable. You can pick one or make one, resize it, move it, and place it anywhere.

rockband-band.jpg

There will be a full review coming. I'm not allowed to talk about the songs in any detail. But I love this game. And I'm usually the guy who writes bad previews because he isn't impressed. I can't wait until Rock Band comes out.

colorful. The latest additions to the Wii Shop Channel deliver a brisk,
eye-pleasing mix of classic gameplay for fall. Dive into this pile of vibrant
titles for a timeless dose of fun and fantasy.Three new classic games go live

Channel or at retail outlets.

This week’s new games are:

Lunar Pool® (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Lunar
Pool takes the historical game of billiards and reinvents it with a unique and
futuristic flair. The rules are simple: All you need to do is use your cue
stick to hit the white cue ball, causing it to hit the other numbered balls and
make them go into the pockets. You can enjoy nearly unlimited game play with 30
tables, two different ball arrangements, and the ability to change the degree
of friction on the table. You can play against a computer or another human
player, so try challenging someone once you’ve got the hang of the game.

Ninja JaJaMaru-kun® (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii
Points): Take on the role of a ninja called JaJaMaru and rescue the captured
Princess Sakura from the evil Namazu Dayuu in this action-packed game,
previously unreleased outside of Japan. JaJaMaru must use his throwing stars to
defeat the monsters lurking in each of Dayuu’s many hideouts. JaJaMaru has to
be careful though, as each monster has its own unique weapon and method of
attacking. The only way for him to advance is to break the floor bricks above
him and move up and down between the levels of each round, defeating monsters
as he goes. To help him, broken bricks sometimes reveal items that JaJaMaru can
use to his advantage, possibly leading to the ultimate power-up: a ride on
Gamapakun, the giant frog. Throw in some bonus stages and you’ve got a game
with a style all its own.

Golden Axe™ III (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, Rated E10+ for Fantasy Violence,
800 Wii Points): The once-peaceful kingdom so familiar to fans of the original
Golden Axe is under threat once again. The Prince of Darkness has stolen the
invaluable Golden Axe, taken over the kingdom and rendered its warriors
harmless with an evil curse. One warrior breaks free from the curse and must
defeat the prince and regain the Golden Axe to save the kingdom. In this one-
or two-player action game, play as a giant, a panther or a sword-wielding human
and fight your way to victory once again.

Red Mile Secures Key Talent for Sin City Game

*SAUSALITO, Calif., October 18, 2007* – Red Mile Entertainment, Inc.
(OTCBB: RDML), a worldwide developer and publisher of interactive
entertainment software, today announced it has engaged acclaimed
video-game industry writing and production talent to participate in the
development of Red Mile’s upcoming game based on multi-award-winning
creator/writer/artist Frank Miller’s /Sin City/ graphic novels and comic
books.

Accomplished game and animation veteran, Flint Dille, will spearhead the
design, scriptwriting, story generation, and overall production of “Sin
City: The Game” (working title). Dille has twenty years of game
experience to his name, and has twice won “Story of the Year” for his
work on /The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay /and on
/Dead to Rights/. In addition to his solid game and animation
credentials, Dille is also a close friend of /Sin City/ creator, Frank
Miller – enough so that Miller named the storyteller in his epic
/300/ “Dilios.” “Frank and I met during what I call our ‘professional
adolescence’ when he was doing the /Dark Knight/ and I was doing the
/Transformers/ cartoon series,” says Dille, “and we’ve been great
friends ever since.” About the /Sin// City/ game, Dille adds, “Frank and
I have been having a party coming up with nasty stuff for the game. In
true /Sin// City/ fashion, some old characters will return, new
characters will appear and – without giving anything away – probably die
horribly. It’s great to be working with the Red Mile team on this
project: They clearly share Frank’s and my commitment to bringing a new
and true /Sin City/ to interactive life.”

Also participating in the game’s development is Union Entertainment.
Union’s video-game producer credits include /The Red Star/ and this
year’s breakout hit, /The Darkness/. Union generated the original /Sin//
City/ concept document that first got Miller interested in adapting
/Sin// City/ as a video game, and was central to setting up the /Sin//
City/ project with Red Mile. “/Sin City/ is one of a select few
properties that everyone agrees is ideal for video games,” said Union
President, Richard Leibowitz, “and we’re very proud to help make that
happen.”

“Flint and Union bring a deep and broad array of video game experience
to /Sin City/ and they’ll be integral to Red Mile’s creating a video
game experience that delivers on gamers’ and fans’ expectations,” said
Chester Aldridge, CEO of Red Mile Entertainment.

UBISOFT ANNOUNCES ASSASSIN'S CREED(TM) VIDEO GAME SCORE COMPOSED

SAN FRANCISCO ? October 16, 2007 ? Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announced the score for the highly anticipated Assassin's Creed(TM) video game is being composed by British Academy Award¬¬?winner Jesper Kyd. Players will become truly immersed into the mindset of Altair, the game's main character, and the rich environments of the game through Jesper's thematic score. The combination of epic orchestral compositions with acoustic, percussion and vocal performances delivers a deeply spiritual aesthetic with Hollywood flair. The rich and melodic palette, created exclusively for Assassin's Creed, will be discovered by players worldwide this November.

"We listened to many composers before finding the right person for Assassin's Creed.
"Jesper Kyd turned out to be the perfect match for the title because he is able to create epic historical pieces fused with both traditional medieval instruments and modern synth sounds,? shared Jade Raymond, producer of Assassin's Creed. "For Assassin's Creed we wanted the score to capture the gruesome atmosphere of medieval warfare but also be edgy and contemporary. Jesper not only achieved this balance but also underlined the changes in gameplay and pacing in a way that immerses the player even further into the
Assassin's Creed experience.?

While the graphical beauty and detail of Assassin's Creed is quite evident visually, the music takes on the same level of precision and attention. Each setting within the game has its own theme and distinct musical identity, ranging from the tragedy-stricken city of Acre to the proud stoic stronghold of Damascus to the powerfully spiritual and multicultural capital of Jerusalem.

"I was inspired by the deep and engaging world of Assassin's Creed and working with the visionary team at Ubisoft Montreal was a fantastic experience,? said Jesper Kyd. "It was truly refreshing to be given so much creative freedom for such a high-profile blockbuster title and I believe we took it to the max.?

In such instances as the surreal and hypnotic compositions that accentuate the Assassin's approach to his target, Kyd instilled his immersive style and film scoring techniques in Altair's interior meditation and stealth modes, while also capturing the action, combat and escape sequences with measured tone that crescendos into a fast-paced fervor.

About Assassin's Creed
The game is set in 1191 AD, when the Third Crusade was tearing the Holy Land apart. Shrouded in secrecy and feared for their ruthlessness, the Assassins intend to stop the hostilities by suppressing both sides of the conflict. Players will assume the role of the main character, Altair, and will have the power to throw their immediate environment into chaos and truly experience the art of a master assassin.

In 2006, Assassin's Creed received the Game Critics Award: Best of E3 2006 for "Best Action-Adventure Game? and swept the "Best PS3 Game? category across numerous video game websites.*

Assassin's Creed will be available in North America at the MSRP of $59.99 with the Limited Edition priced at $69.99 ? Assassin's Creed is rated "M? for Mature by the ESRB. For more information, please visit www.assassinscreed.com.

*1UP "Best PS3 Game,? GameSpot "Best PLAYSTATION 3 Editors' Choice Winner,? GameSpy "Best of E3 PS3 Game of the Show,? Games Radar "Best of E3 PLAYSTATION 3,? GameTrailers "Best of Show,? IGN "Best PS3 Game of the Show?

TNA Bound for Glory!

TNA Bound For Glory
Gwinett Center, Duluth GA
10/14/07

As part of Midway’s weekend of TNA they took about 50 journalists to witness first hand the excitement of a live TNA professional wrestling event. Although the action was clearly staged (many times I saw the participants laughing or counting with each other to make sure that the timing of the stunts was correct), it was thrilling. It was like a Broadway show, but one based on violence and acrobatics. And the crowd loved it. They ate up every minute of it, every 2 and a half count, every act of bravado, and every broken chair.

If you'd like to view the slideshow click here.

My first thoughts were, “Wow, this looks really fake.” “They’re not even hitting each other.” “This isn’t wrestling.” “The game is more real than the event because the outcome is uncertain.”

And then I left our corporate box and went down into the crowd. The enthusiasm was infectious. It wasn’t about fake fight anymore; it was about an intricately choreographed dance and controlled violence between personalities. Who cares if it was fake? It was fun and fairly clean and yes, exciting.

If you'd like to view the slideshow click here.

I sure as hell roared with approval when my buddy Samoan Joe (a future post will include an interview with him) dove through the ropes to tackle his opponent out on the arena floor. I laughed when it took three “normal” females to throw an absolute monster named Kong out of the ring. She was indeed a monster, probably bigger than most NFL linemen.

This brings me to a greater understanding of professional wrestling. It’s a show and the performers are talented. The writing is hackneyed, banal, and predictable. The actors portray strong personalities and the stunts they do look pretty difficult to pull off to me. There was a lot of aerial combat. I’d imagine that a person could get hurt pretty badly if they screwed one of those stunts up. And if your opponent screwed something up it could probably even kill you; being off by a few inches on a piledriver would definitely crack your skull or break your neck.

These guys are not always so big. As you can see from the photos, I might even be considered in the same ballpark size and fitness of the smaller ones. This is, of course, a joke. When I wrestled I was a lean 140 and I’m about 60 lbs heavier than that now. The thing is that these guys must be tough as nails (I may have been tough as nails as a teenager, but at 37 I’m far from it). They get smacked around and bash into things all day every day. It can’t be all that much fun getting thrown out of the ring or having a 250lb guy land on you. Sure, the wrestling isn’t real and I bet that a very good high school heavy-weight could take almost all of them in a straight on wrestling match. But, first of all, that’s not what it’s about and, second of all, I really have to admire grown men who can participate in something this physically demanding and at the same time exhibit so much charisma.

If you'd like to view the slideshow click here.

How do wrestlers measure up against other athletes? The first thing that comes to mind is that I’m pretty sure if Scott Stevens unloaded on any of them they probably wouldn’t get up. They couldn’t juke and run down a football field either. They probably couldn’t beat Tiger Woods in golf, but if he stepped into the ring he might never walk again. I’m not so sure professional wrestling is a sport. It is a cultural phenomenon, an intricately choreographed display of violence in which some really tough guys hold the crowd in the palm of their hand and under the spell of their charisma. It is a spectacle, and a spectacle of the best kind – a fun one!

Bioshock Review

Bioshock
Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: Irrational Games
Rated M for Mature
Rating: 5 out of 5

Review by Matt Congdon

16a.jpg

There are a few rare games out there that force you to play them; once you lay down that cash, you're sucked in until you finish. Sure, many games have great stories (Final Fantasy X), and some have great game play (God of War), but few combine both into something so special that you just can't quit. One such title this year that shouldn’t be missed any adult gamer looking for a bit of adventure.. The game creates an intriguing story, but it’s the gameplay that makes the story come alive. Too many games these days have stories that aren't connected with the actual gameplay, but rather just feature boring cut scene movies--which the typical ADD gamer (such as myself) doesn’t really like to sit through. Bioshock’s story is delivered mostly through audio, which is transmitted to you via radio, so you're listening to the story while shooting, dismembering and electrocuting baddies through Bioshock’s Levels.

The story of Bioshock was so intriguing to me that when I was getting an important message from Atlas concerning his family, I found myself telling my roommates to shut the hell up. The only cut scene in the game is found right at the beginning when your plane crashes. The moment you surface, your character gasps: I did the same, though I was gasping at the amazing water and fire effects. Even before entering Rapture (the main setting), you are nervously anticipating what’s to come.

26.jpg

In a nutshell, the story behind the game is that a somewhat mad man created an underwater civilization where rich people, crazy artists, and mad scientists can live in peace. Of course, things go wrong as people start to crave a substance called adam, which provides them with ungodly powers. Soon this whole “world” starts to freak for this substance adam. Common people follow no real rules to society and become mindless killing machines known to us merely as splicers. Girls known to us only as "little sisters" use a special needle-like tool to take the adam straight from victims' heart. Big Daddies protect the little sisters; they look like 1950’s navy divers with big suits and huge drills. They don’t attack without being provoked, thankfully, but you will not be able to resist the urge to attack them. You'll be craving adam soon enough, no better then a crazed splicer. The Big Daddy fights present a challenge and a chance to get creative. After fights you are given the chance to harvest the little sisters or rescue them, these decisions play out in the end of the game and give the game some definite replay value. Bioshock’s variety of plasmids is where a lot of the games strength lies. There are so many weapons, powers, and other things you can use in Bioshock that no fight is ever the same.

ah5.jpg

As for weapons and power (called plasmids in Bioshock), they're a blast to use. All the guns in the game have a cool 1940’s feel to them and are pretty powerful in the beginning. The first gun you get is the pistol, and it has some nice stopping power at short range. Head shots can turn splicer heads into red Kool-Aid pretty easily. The shotgun, my weapon of choice for taking down those nasty splicers, has a nice spread of fire. All guns can be upgraded, and all can use three different kinds of ammo. The shotguns exploding 00 buck is hard to come by but nasty fun to use. The pistol’s anti-personnel ammo can cut up those splicers fairly easily. The difficulty with Bioshock lies in its resource management. You must plan how to use what equipment as effectively but more importantly efficiently as you can. Plasmids are some fun good fun, too. My personal favorites are winter blast, swarm of bees, and telekinesis. Using them together creatively is the best. I like to set my target on fire, watch him try to jump into water, then send an electricity blast through the water. Or light a table on fire, then chuck it at someone. Or how about freezing your enemy, surrounding him with mines and gas tanks, then when they thaw out, blow em up. Killing really shouldn’t be this fun.

ah10.jpg

There isn't much more I can tell you about Bioshock that isn't a spoiler, but I can tell you that it feels like you’re in rapture. Bioshock defines next generation gaming. Its artistic graphics and art-deco style cannot be compared to most games. The audio is what really makes the game come alive. The ambient sounds and old music are what make you feel in game. Every piano key plink and bullet ricochet feels and sounds appropriate. The money you spent on your Xbox 360 or 4 thousand dollar gaming computer will certainly feel justified, at least while your playing. Bioshock is well-designed game that most adventure, horror, fps, and action fans will appreciate. The game isn’t meant just to be played, but also to be experienced. If your lucky enough to read Maxims review(or should I say unlucky) they truly disgraced the game with a 3/5 rating. No offense to Maxim fans but maybe keep the meat-heads out of the games department. As a non steroid user I feel this is a possibility for game of the year. [I think it’s not that they’re meatheads, it’s that they don’t play the games and just rate the press releases and trailers. MDS] Currently I don’t believe there to be a better single person console shooter experience for any system, Bioshock is an experience not to be missed. A great game.
