Wii-kly Update: Three New Classic Games Announced for Wii Shop Channel

Wii-kly Update: Three New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop ChannelLet’s hope
you all survived the long holiday weekend. With all the eating, traveling and
family fun, isn’t it time to do something just for you? So take a few minutes
and do a little shopping from the comfort of your couch, away from the chaos of
the malls. This week you can get into a game of hoops, do a little faux
gambling or head out to sea with your favorite dolphin friend.

Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games
to the Wii™ Shop Channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet
connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be
purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games
are:

DOUBLE DRIBBLE™ (NES®, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points):
DOUBLE DRIBBLE, the first 5-on-5, full-court home basketball game, is pure
hoops action at its finest. While still a surprisingly accurate basketball game
for its time, the frantic action keeps you on your toes as your players run
from one end of the court to the other. Choose from a handful of teams and
multiple levels of difficulty as you take on the computer alone or challenge a
friend and see who has the better skills. Take the ball and sink shots from
locations all over the court, or get in your opponent’s face and do your best
to block the shot. Better yet, drive the lane and rock the rim to see one of
the game’s trademark slam-dunk cut scenes. He shoots, he scores!

Vegas Stakes™ (Super NES®, 1-4 players, rated E for Everyone – Simulated
Gambling, 800 Wii Points): Feel like taking a road trip to Las Vegas? Let your
inner high roller go wild as you try your luck at five different
games—blackjack, slots, poker, craps and roulette. Start with only $1,000 in
your pocket and play your way through five casinos, each with a different theme
and varying limits. But no one wants to gamble alone, right? Not a problem, as
you’ll be able to choose one of four friends to tag along and offer advice
when you need it. Further enhancing the experience is the fact that you’ll be
presented with a slew of interactions with random casino patrons. Best be
careful, though—your choices in these situations could either get you closer
to the millions of dollars you’re after or cost you a pile of that
hard-earned cash. Roll the dice, spin the wheel, hit or stand—do whatever it
takes to stake your claim in Vegas and beat the house!

Ecco Jr.™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): The
aquatic adventures of Ecco come to life for a younger generation of gamers.
Perfect for kids, Ecco Jr. finds our young hero heading out to sea with a
variety of tasks he must perform in order to get there. Along with his friends
Tara the baby orca and Kitnee the young Atlantic dolphin, Ecco Jr. will
interact with sea lions, sea horses and other aquatic life as he makes his
journey to the Big Blue. Introduce your kids to the classic series of Ecco the
Dolphin titles by downloading Ecco Jr. today.

Wii-kly Update: Three New Classic Games Announced for Wii Shop Channel

Wii-kly Update: Three New Classic Games Added on the Wii Console’s First
Anniversary

Wii™ celebrates its first anniversary today, and big stars from past consoles
are coming out to help Nintendo celebrate. Luminaries walking the Virtual
Console™ red carpet this week include Mario™ and Luigi™, Sonic The
Hedgehog and Zonk. So throw on your best tuxedo or finest gown, and get ready
to party with these video game A-listers.Three new classic games go live at 9
a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel every
Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii
Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop
Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

Wrecking Crew™ (NES®, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): In
the days before Mario and Luigi became sports stars in their downtime between
plumbing and saving the Princess, they tried their hands as one-man wrecking
crews. With a hammer as their only tool, players take control of the brothers
and set out to destroy ladders, rip out pipes, knock down walls and detonate
explosive devices. But make sure to plan your path of destruction carefully, as
each building is designed as its own clever puzzle—if you’re not careful,
you can easily trap yourself in a dead end. Adding to the excitement and
challenge are fireballs, enemies and an angry foreman roaming the buildings.
They’re all trying to stop you from moving on to the next stage. With 100
buildings to demolish and the ability to construct your own, it’s a wonder
Mario and Luigi ever got back to saving the Mushroom Kingdom.

Sonic 3D Blast™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii
Points): The evil Dr. Eggman (aka Dr. Robotnik) stumbles upon an alternate
dimension where some odd birds called Flickies have the ability to travel
anywhere. In order to get help in his search for the Chaos Emeralds, Dr. Eggman
transforms the Flickies into robots that will help him track down his coveted
gems. Of course, it’s up to our favorite blue hedgehog, Sonic, to step in and
save the day. Jump into this 3-D adventure as Sonic or his buddy Tails, and
collect the golden rings to help free the Flickies and defeat the doctor.

Super Air Zonk (TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM, 1 player, rated E for Everyone – Mild
Cartoon Violence, 800 Wii Points): Zonk is back in Super Air Zonk, the sequel
to the shooting game spin-off of the Bonk series, Air “Zonk.” Now moving to
a rockabilly beat and able to transform into nine different characters, Zonk
lets loose through seven action-packed stages in another battle against his
arch nemesis, SandroVitch. Power up Zonk with the classic Meat item, eventually
turning him into the champion of justice, Ultra Zonk, or the fearsome Tyrano
Zonk in the latter stages of the game. After rescuing his friends from enemies,
Zonk can also morph with them to combine powers. Fight enemies with killer
tunes belted out from a trusty microphone. Hurl freshly made sushi at them.
With its variety of wacky attacks, Super Air Zonk has a sense of humor all its own.

UBISOFT'S BEOWULF(TM) VIDEO GAME BASED ON PARAMOUNT AND SHANGRI-LA'S

UBISOFT'S BEOWULF(TM) VIDEO GAME BASED ON PARAMOUNT AND SHANGRI-LA'S
HIGHLY ANTICIPATED FEATURE FILM IN STORES NOW

Epic Tale of Power and Glory Gives Players the Chance to Define Their Legacy as Legendary Norse Warrior

SAN FRANCISCO ? November 16, 2007 ? Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announced that Beowulf(TM), the action combat game based on Paramount Pictures' and Shangri-La Entertainment's Beowulf, the upcoming feature film from Academy Award-winning director Robert Zemeckis, is now available on store shelves.

"Today is an exciting day for Ubisoft as we launch the Beowulf video game alongside the release of the Beowulf movie,? stated Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft. "Working closely with Paramount Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment has allowed us to breathe new life into this ancient tale, creating an amazing gaming experience that will extend Beowulf's adventures for fans of both the epic poem and the new feature film.?

The Beowulf video game is an interactive experience that captures the spirit and artistic beauty of the film while offering an even deeper look into the epic tale of Beowulf. The video game, developed by the award-winning team that created the original Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter in Ubisoft's Tiwak studio, features exclusive content that is unexplored by both the film and the classic tale, extending the adventure through 30 years of the Beowulf story.

"The Beowulf video game extends and complements the motion picture experience beyond the silver screen,? said Sandi Isaacs, senior vice president interactive and mobile for Paramount Pictures. "Our goal has always been to provide fans with authentic and compelling game play timed to coincide with the opening of our film, and this game delivers on this promise.?

Key features:
+ Players will delve even deeper into the adventure as they play through 30 years of the Beowulf story not seen in the movie to experience more of Beowulf's life and mold their own legacy.
+ An authentic adaptation of the film, which includes the voices and likeness of Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins as King Hrothgar, Ray Winstone as Beowulf, Brendan Gleeson as Wiglaf and Sebastien Roche as Wulfgar.
+ The mystical world of Beowulf comes to life in stunning fashion. Powered by the next evolution of the award-winning YETI technology used to create the critically acclaimed Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, Beowulf delivers an unrivalled graphical experience.
+ Players unlock an army of up to 12 Thanes to unlock as they increase their heroic experience. Players use the Thane army to their advantage by giving orders, triggering in-game mechanisms, assigning strategic positions and tailoring upgradeable weapons to the situation or enemy.
+ Carnal Power allows the use of grapple attacks for visceral hand-to-hand combat and special weapons. Players use legacy experience points for Carnal upgrades resulting in increasingly fierce action and brutal attacks.
+ Dynamic combat system including advanced combos, skilful parries and increased battle proficiency as the player progresses.

The Beowulf video game is available for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft (MSRP: $59.99), the PLAYSTATION3 computer entertainment system (MSRP: $59.99), the PSP (PlayStationPortable) system (MSRP: $39.99) and Windows PC (MSRP: $49.99). The game is rated "M? for Mature by the ESRB.

First Next-Gen America's Army Game Touts Deep Multiplayer Experience

SAN FRANCISCO ? November 15, 2007 ? Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, and the U.S. Army announced that America's Army: True Soldiers(TM), exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft is now available in retail stores nationwide at the manufacturers suggested retail price of $59.99 ? the game is rated "T? for Teen.

America's Army: True Soldiers takes full advantage of the multiplayer experience featuring eight maps developed by Red Storm Entertainment and full Xbox LIVE online gaming service Clan support, so teams will be able to quickly jump online and compete. Players will immerse themselves within the true infantry experience of a modern Soldier via the graphical prowess of the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 game engine. As a Soldier in single-player mode, players will advance through their career and take on roles such as Rifleman, Grenadier, Automatic Rifleman and Sniper. Red Storm and the Army are working together to make sure that the America's Army: True Soldiers gameplay experience is an authentic Army experience.

The America's Army: True Soldiers game accurately portrays the values that guide U.S. Army Soldiers by specifically incorporating gameplay based on mission accomplishment, teamwork, leadership, rules of engagement and respect for life and property. Just like in real combat, honor and respect must be earned, and in the game, the Play-Lead-Recruit feature allows players to earn respect as they move up through the ranks and become true leaders.

Teammates can award honor points to other team members who play honorably and jump in when the mission is on the line. As players accumulate honor points, they earn America's Army reward coins that can be redeemed for prizes in the America's Army "Live the Experience? contest that offers unique prizes such as becoming a Golden Knight, a game developer, or a Soldier for a day (http://truesoldiers.americasarmy.com)

America's Army: True Soldiers is going to be a huge multiplayer hit on Xbox LIVE and a compelling feature is how the single-player experience integrates seamlessly into the multiplayer aspect of the game. Single-player accomplishments and skills earned in categories such as Valor, Marksmanship, Stealth and Conditioning, will be upgradeable and then immediately utilized on Xbox LIVE to dominate online.

As the most realistic U.S. Army experience on a console, America's Army: True Soldiers will feature high-tech equipment, including a Blue Force Tracker that improves recognition of targets while increasing information to the player. Additional Intel will be gathered by the Raven UAV and displayed on their Blue Force Tracker. AI teammates can share Intel via in-game
voice-over.

America's Army: True Soldiers is a game that will appeal to both hardcore gamers who love Xbox LIVE, military fans and those who want the ability to play through an authentic U.S. Army experience on the console. The innovative parental controls allow parents to determine the settings at the level they feel appropriate, thus customizing the gameplay action for fresh recruits or for season veterans. Super Mario Galaxy For Wii Showcases Mario's Star Power

It's the Hottest Game on the Hottest System for the Holidays REDMOND, Wash.,
Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The amazing new Super Mario Galaxy(TM) game launches
for Wii(TM) in T-minus 3 ... 2 ... 1. The hottest game for the hottest
system fills players and observers with an otherworldly sense of wonder, and
demonstrates the skill and imagination of legendary Nintendo video game
designer Shigeru Miyamoto.

Video game icon Mario(TM) launches into space and encounters a multitude of
crazy creatures on unbelievable planets. Players master the changing gravities
they encounter while exploring each planet and collecting Power Stars. For the
first time, Super Mario Galaxy lets a second player lend a hand in "co-star"
mode. Using the revolutionary motion-sensitive Wii Remote(TM), the co-star can
point at the screen to collect starbits to shoot at enemies, deflect incoming
attacks or stall enemies to help Mario. It's a way for the newcomers that
Nintendo has brought into the world of video games to play right alongside
their more experienced peers.

"Super Mario Galaxy is a game that everybody can play, whether you've been a
Mario fan for 25 years or you just started playing Wii Sports," says George
Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and
corporate communications. "It's an easy favorite for game of the year and
should stand as one of the best -- and most beautiful -- games of all time."

In the game, Bowser(TM) crashes the star festival and carries Princess Peach's
castle into space. On a curious new planet, Mario learns a powerful spin move
that players pull off by shaking the Wii Remote. Mario also has an arsenal of
new transformations at his disposal, including the Boo Mario, which causes him
to float and fly through walls, and Bee Mario, which turns him into a
beyond-adorable flying bee.

Super Mario Galaxy is Rated E for Everyone. Once you pick up a copy and you're
in the mood to throw a party to show it off to all your friends, you should
check out the new Mario-themed Evite at Evite.com. It shows how Mario's look
has changed through the years, and it's a great way to rally your friends for a
Wii party.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content
their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii
features, visit Wii.com.

Three New Classic Games Announced for Wii Shop Channel

Winter vacation may be weeks away, but there's no need to wait for a fun-filled
escape. The latest additions to the Wii(TM) Shop Channel can take you to places
as familiar as a gymnasium or as fantastical as faraway planets. Fans of sports
games, space-age shooters and intergalactic action will all find something to
love in this week's lively lineup.Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m.
Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii
owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points(TM) to
download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at
retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Volleyball (NES(R), 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Step
onto the court in one of the first volleyball games ever made. Select either
the men's or women's competition, choose from one of eight available countries
to represent, and prepare for some intensely fun game play. The straightforward
controls include all the moves you'll need to effectively direct your
six-person team. Take some time mastering them in the training mode, though,
because you'll need all the practice you can get when competing against
challenging computer opponents. If you feel like some multiplayer action, take
on a friend in the two-player mode and see whose skills are more polished.
Block, set and spike your way to victory.

AXELAY(R) (Super NES(R), 1 player, rated E for Everyone -- Mild Fantasy
Violence, 800 Wii Points): Mysterious aliens have invaded the Earth-like planet
of Corliss, slowly draining the planet's resources. Take control of the
prototype Axelay ship and use its wide range of advanced weaponry to battle
enemy forces. Play through multiple stages of action -- from other planets to
space stations -- all on your way to destroying the alien headquarters. You are
Corliss' last line of defense, so be careful not to be too distracted by the
excellent graphics (including great scrolling effects) and rocking music. Pilot
the Axelay using Konami's famously tight play control and experience what many
consider to be a classic of the shooter genre.

BLUE'S JOURNEY (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, rated E for Everyone -- Comic Mischief,
900 Wii Points): The planet of Raguy has been invaded by the Daruma tribe,
changing it from a beautiful and peaceful place into one filled with pollution.
Released in 1991, this horizontally scrolling action game tells the story of an
insectarian named Blue and his quest to save the planet and keep its
inhabitants from being turned into slaves. Use Blue's main weapon, a leaf, to
flip enemies onto their heads and then throw them at other members of the
Daruma tribe, defeating anyone in your way. Additional weapons, such as bombs
and boomerangs, are also available, or you can collect flowers to purchase
other special items like honey or swim fins. Blue also has the special ability
to change his size at will -- if he's too big to fit in a particular area, then
shrink him. The bright, colorful graphics, combined with lots of hidden items
to find, ensure an enjoyable experience with plenty of replay value. Help Blue
muster all his strength and eliminate the Daruma tribe.

NBA 2K8 Review

NBA 2k8
Matt Congdon
Score 3.5/5

NBA2K8-Screen1.jpg

Basketball, when anyone cares, is such a great sport. It’s all about being down to the wire and the players are running on empty but still manage to get that game winning steal. However the problem is in the NBA it seems like they hardly care. The NBA finals this year this amassed an all time low of viewers, which shows that the players’ lack of interest is infectious. I know I didn’t watch it, but I think I must have watched 30+ college games during the NCAA playoffs. As far as NBA video games go, NBA 2K8 does a good job capturing the feel of the NBA. The game has its lows and its highs. It can get very exciting when you tied up going into the final minute and playing against a friend, but playing against the computer isn’t that fun.
NBA 28k is a lot of fun at times but just like the NBA has some definite flaws. One of the most obvious is that too many damn layups and dunks are missed. If there is someone else in your vicinity in the paint chances are you will miss the layup. You shoot literally about 25% on layups with a defender on you. It gets really annoying after you miss a couple in a row. That problem also extends to shooting elsewhere. If there is a defender in your face you can’t shoot at all. For 3 pt shots for example if you are wide open you might shoot about 60%, while with a defender on a mere 10% or less. This make playing defense tough because you know if they swing to an open guard on the perimeter it’s pretty much automatic.

NBA2K8-Screen7.jpg

One thing that I really appreciate is how the ball is not magnetic to the players. The ball can be knocked loose, bounce around, be blocked, it truly has a life of its own. If bouncing towards out of bounds a player will sometimes dive out trying to throw it in. Of course this only works sometimes which is nice to keep it realistic. This makes you cautious with passing on offense, as balls can be tipped away quite easily when trying to weave a bounce pass into the center.
Size is so important in this game. As a result players like Iverson, Nash and Kidd pretty much suck. They all get their shots blocked and are never able to get that open. Forget about driving the lane with them, because half the time the ball won’t even get close to the basket - it will just get blocked back in their respective faces. If you can find a big man who can shoot a little then you’re in the money, and my recommendation to those who are playing through the season mode is to trade for one. Players like Nowitski, Anthony, and Garnett really can rip up defenses. During one 5 minute quarter game I played with the west all stars, I subbed in Anthony early in the game just to see how if he could shoot three’s. In a 5 minute quarter game the average points scored by each team is about 60. Anthony that game had 34 going 14-21. Quite impressive for someone who shoots 40% in real life. It is really easy to get short buckets if you have a good player down low, someone who will dunk most of the time.

NBA2K8-Screen8.jpg

Sometimes setting up plays to run and penetrating at all on offense can be tough. Much different from the older games where using the juke button would pretty much get you through anything. The key to this game is truly working it inside and getting easy buckets off of fast break points. When the other team misses a shot it is pretty easy to chuck it up court to someone and score. Although this doesn’t work every time, it does create a problem. This creates radical swings in the score, and if you are losing and miss a few times in a row you could be out of the game. Coming from behind in this game is so hard to do. There is no point in the game when you are safe to take dumb shots. This makes it worse because usually when you’re behind you’ll be more likely to shoot 3’s but that just makes matters worse. Soon your deficit will be snowballing out of control and before you know it you’re down by 30. I took on my friend the other day. The first game he destroyed me by 25 points, the second I beat him by 31.The swings in momentum in this game are huge and you need to control it to be successful.

NBA2K8-Screen14.jpg

The graphics in this game are outstanding, some of the best I have seen in a sports game. The player models look good and the flow of the cloth uniforms looks very realistic. The floor shines brightly as It should and the audio for the most part is spot on. Some of the commentary is a little cheesy at times but I guess it breaks up the action nicely in a long game. Most of the coaches’ faces look really bad, I’m not sure why but they just look like really ugly porcelain dolls.
As far as basketball goes this year, nothing is perfect but NBA 2k8 at least tries to be. The game was developed for the most part with some thought and has been brought together nicely. The graphics look really good and it plays pretty smoothly with not nearly as many bugs as NBA live 08. This is the best basketball game on the 360 this year, so if you need those updated rosters and the unimportant new features this game has, Id say go for it. If you’re just a casual basketball fan and you had last years’ edition, I’d say don’t waste your money on this year’s, there isn’t all that much difference.

NBA Live 08 Review

Review by Matt Congdon

nbalive1.jpg

The first EA Sports game that I played was Madden 64. I was horrified. I explicitly asked for NFL QB Club 98 for Christmas, but I was stuck with madden (what does my mom know about football or games). In my eyes this game sucked hard. How can you make a game without an NFL license or endorsements? When wanting to play as the Patriots I was stuck with some team named “Foxboro”, not to mention that the graphics sucked and so did the game play. I would describe it the pinnacle of boring. I promised this would be the last EA Sports game I would buy.
Later in life, I got a PS2 and decided to give EA Sports another chance on a different console. I was thrilled at Madden 2001,. The game kicked ass, and it kept getting better as the years passed. EA Sports produced a string of brilliant games and that kept getting bigger and better. I thought this was the kind of company that was out for the players not the dollars. Their hockey and basketball games all were a lot of fun to play and somehow the developers improved them from year to year.
Of course, EA Sports let me down. They suck again, They have started a long down spiral, passing mediocre a year or two ago and they are now about as bad as I can imagine [[I’m trying to avoid obscenity. Sucks is ok, but I draw the line at shit. MDS]]. NBA LIVE 08 illustrates this point. This game is crap. EA Sports just threw money and a deadline at a development team. It is inexplicable to me how a company can mess up basketball so badly after having good editions for last generation consoles. The game looks alright on an HDTV, but on an SDTV looks very distorted and odd. It seems like there are a lot of fisheye type replay angles. There are so many flaws that, the decent game they might have had for PS2 is now damaged goods.
