What's in Store for Xbox 360 in 2008?

I had the opportunity earlier today to chat with Aaron Goldberg, Group Product Manager for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live. We talked about a bunch of Xbox related things and he brought me a shiny new Elite which I'm sure I'll enjoy.

We talked about new games that are coming out this year for Xbox 360:
April 29 - GTA IV. It's going to be in HD for the first time, have many online multiplayer modes, and exclusive episodic content for Xbox 360 gamers starting in fall 2008.

June - Ninja Gaiden II - controls will be easier to master and there will be more save points. I really hate games that don't have enough save points, so this is great news.

November - Gears of War 2

By end of year 2008, there will be over 1000 titles available for Xbox 360. Microsoft's goal is to become the default platform for developers. Remember how 3 years ago every game was targeted at PS2? We're rapidly approaching the days where every game is targeted at Xbox 360. Already, many games are optimized for 360. An example of this is Madden NFL, which ran at 60 fps on 360 and 30 fps on PS3.

Microsoft is really building up Live. Sony completely missed the boat on this one. Microsoft has a valuable entry point into millions of living rooms with Xbox Live. They've got more HD available for download than satellite or cable including movies, TV shows, music videos, and game trailers. TV Shows cost about $2 to own and movies are rentals that time out.

One very cool feature is that if you download something from Xbox Live onto your 360 and then go to a friend's house, you can log in from his 360 and download the same thing. This is a clear advantage over DVR. With DVR if you want to share a program someone has to come to your house to watch it.

Before Aaron left he showed me a beautifully custom painted Xbox 360 Elite created for GTA IV. The finish was amazing - this was no cheap silkscreening job like you see on gaming PC's. He said that they hired a company that does auto-detailing to do it. They are making 500 numbered units. I should've taken a photo. The thing was beautiful. You can't buy one - they're giving them away.

Two New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop Channel

The two games joining the lineup this week are considered cult classics, yet
they deal with topics as varied as farm management and shooting enemies to the
strains of heavy-metal tunes. Just don’t get the two mixed up, since most
livestock don’t like heavy metal and it takes more than turnips to defeat
fire-spewing sea serpents.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every
Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii
Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop
Channel or at retail outlets.

This week’s new games are:

Harvest Moon® (Super NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points):
You bought the farm, so now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and try living
off the fat of the land. Fresh air and the beauty of the outdoors will be
fulfilling, but a successful farm needs a lot of working capital as well. There
are buildings on your property, but they are in need of livestock. You have a
modest house, but if things get lonely in the field, it’s going to take a
remodel to woo a female farming companion. Your challenge is to dig in and
build your life as a farmer from the ground up. How you manage will determine
the outcome, but remember: You always reap what you sow.

Lords of Thunder (TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone –
Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): Lords of Thunder is a side-scrolling shooter
that has you take on the role of a legendary warrior, blasting enemies to
heavy-metal tunes. Your enemies are plotting to revive Zaggart, “The Dark
One,” who was sealed beneath the six continents of Mistral. It’s up to
Landis, descendant of the heroic Dyu, to stop them. Choose the order in which
to attack the six stages. Before each stage, select one of four magic armors
and use crystals you’ve collected during your battles to buy items. Selecting
the right armor for each stage is the key to your ultimate victory. Then get
ready to face awesome enemies like a fire-spewing sea serpent or a giant
insect. Whether it’s the fast-paced shooting or breaking into the fortress of
a stage boss, you’ll be blown away by the intensity of Lords of Thunder.

/KOEI's Simulation of the Conquest of Feudal Japan Now in Stores
throughout North America/

Burlingame, CA - February 6, 2008 -- KOEI, recognized worldwide as the
premier brand of strategy and action games, announced that Nobunaga's
Ambition: Rise to Power is available beginning today at North American
retailers including GameStop, Best Buy, EB Games, Game Crazy, Amazon.com

to Power, can visit the official minisite at www.koei.com/risetopower

*About Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power
*Set during the 16th century, /Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power/ sends
players back in time to the Sengoku (Warring States) period of Feudal
Japan. It was during this time that the visionary Nobunaga Oda assembled
the most advanced military force in Japan, and instituted new policies
that stimulated the growth of the nation's economy.

In /Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power/, players will assume the role of
Nobunaga, or of a rival warlord, in their quest to unite Japan under one
rule. Packed with 7 dramatic scenarios - from the 1551 Struggle for
Power to the events following Nobunaga's death in 1582, /Nobunaga's
Ambition: Rise to Power/ lets players embark on their quest from more
than 300 different starting points.

For the first time in the series, military campaigns are carried out
using an explosive 3D real-time battle system. Plus a new command lets
players go "all in" and risk their entire empire in battle. If
victorious, players will expand their empire, but a defeat could mean
the total loss of their land.

/Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power/ is more than just a game of
military domination. Life in Feudal Japan is brought to life with
remarkable detail. In vibrant castle towns the daily lives of characters
will unfold while players nurture their village into a flourishing
empire. Players will also manage government affairs and develop critical
infrastructure such as ninja camps, blacksmiths, and markets. A robust
character edit function features a wide variety of character faces, the
ability to edit stats, and let's the player choose when and where the
characters will appear.

Originally released in Japan as Nobunaga's Ambition: Tenkasousei,
/Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power/ marks the return of the series to

*Pendulum Ignites a Cinematic Trailer for THQ's /Frontlines: Fuel of War/*

*/3 minute High Definition CGI movie paints a chilling picture of the

*San Diego**, Calif.** February 4, 2008* - Pendulum, a leading digital
animation & fx studio for the advertising, video game and entertainment
industries, has completed cinematic work for /'Frontlines: Fuel of
War'/, for publisher, THQ, and developer, Kaos Studios. The 3-minute HD
cinematic trailer explains the eerily possible future war which is based
on the headlines of today.

The game is set in the midst of a world in crisis, where a WW III is
unfolding as it reacts to depleting natural resources and political
instability. Beginning with brewing unrest in urban centers and
escalating into the most horrible of heated modern warfare, the movie
delivers a barrage of high-tech weaponry, stealth aircraft streaking
toward unsuspecting targets, high-speed tanks crashing through rural
terrain and ominous missiles raining from the sky. Adding to this large
scale chaos are harrowing scenes of infantry combat and urban warfare,
as superpowers collide to reclaim a world on the brink of destruction.
The trailer allows a glimpse of the shockingly realistic and dynamic
universe that players will have the opportunity to experience.
Exercising its award winning 3D capabilities, Pendulum brings the
believable world of /'Frontlines: Fuel of War'/ to life in this recent
fully CGI (Computer Generated Image) cinematic game trailer.

"Frontlines: Fuel of War is an extremely exciting AAA title and we
were very proud to have played a role in its development," said
Robert Taylor, President and Exec Producer of Pendulum. "The HD CGI
cinematic trailer was created to help suspend disbelief by
conveying critical background elements of an all-too-plausible story,
and drawing the players emotionally into the chaotic world of the game.
It's always been Pendulum's goal to create compelling storytelling
and exciting action sequences for our clients and their audiences.
Working with Kaos and THQ on this project was an ideal opportunity for
us to do exactly that."

Kaos Studios had built next-generation assets for the game, but were
eager to expand upon its photorealism, take advantage of the HD
resolution, and leverage the rendering possibilities inherent in
pre-rendered CGI. Pendulum was hired to help facilitate their vision,
with the ultimate goal being to faithfully maintain the atmosphere and
tone of Kaos' richly textured world, while enhancing its believability,
refining the already high quality assets, and lending the sequences a
sense of dramatic intensity for which the studio has become well known.
To do this, Pendulum used award-wining tools like Autodesk Maya,
Pixologic ZBrush, eyeon Fusion, Adobe AfterFX, and mental images'
powerful rendering engine, mental ray.

Pendulum's Michael McCormick served as the project's 3D Lead and
Director of Animation, with Taylor as Pendulum's Exec Producer and Lead
Compositor, Wade Ammon as Associate Producer, and Kaos Studios' Art
Director, Luis Cataldi, serving as the project's Creative Director.

Skype Now Available on PSP-2000 with New Firmware Upgrade

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced the launch of
Skype™ on PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, enabling PSP-2000
owners to make free calls over the Internet to anyone using Skype anywhere in
the world, as well as call and receive calls from any landline or mobile phone
for a small fee. This new functionality – available through a free system
software upgrade (ver. 3.90) released today – connects the PSP-2000 user
base with the more than 276 million registered Skype users around the world.

The new slimmer and lighter PSP system can now be used as a social
communications device, whether you want to call a buddy before playing SOCOM
together or just want to stay connected with your friends and family when
you’re on the go. The addition of Skype expands PSP’s broad set of
entertainment capabilities and demonstrates how SCEA continues to add
innovative services that benefit PSP owners.

How it works

· Download and install the 3.90 firmware upgrade to the PSP-2000

· Connect the PSP system to the Internet at a Wi-Fi hotspot*.

· Attach a PSP Headset ($19.99 MSRP) and the Remote Control from
the PSP-2000 Headphones ($29.99), and insert a Memory Stick Duo to save the
Skype software.

· Access the Skype/Sign In icon within the Network category of
the XMB menu. First-time Skype users need to create a free account, while
existing Skype users can simply enter their username/password.

· To make a call, either access the Contacts icon and click on a
name or scroll to the Dial icon.

Communicating with non-Skype numbers

While calling other Skype users is free, PSP owners can also purchase Skype
Credit to make SkypeOut™ calls to landline and mobile phone numbers
around the world. Skype Credit can be bought online at http://skype.com,
accessible on your PSP system or a computer.

There are two ways to pay for SkypeOut:

· Pay As You Go: Place a pre-paid amount of Skype Credit in your
account and then refill it as you need it. It’s just 2.1 cents per minute
to Skype’s 30 most popular destinations around the world.

· Pay Monthly: Sign up for the Skype Pro™ premium
subscription for just $3.00/month. This gives you free calling to landlines and
mobile phones within the U.S. and Canada (with no connection fee**); a
discounted rate for a personal online number (SkypeIn™) to receive calls;
voicemail; and other features, such as the ability to pay nothing per minute
for local calls when travelling to 29 other countries (connection fee**

You can also purchase a personal online number so you can receive calls
wherever you are in the world with a subscription to SkypeIn for $60.00/year or
$18.00/three months (save $36 on this feature with a Skype Pro subscription).

When using Skype, PSP owners can also view and modify their Skype settings and
account details (including username creation, SkypeOut settings, voicemail
settings and call forwarding), manage their contact list, and see which friends
are online and available to talk.

Further details and instructions on how to update the PSP system software are
available at http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP/About/SystemUpdate.
